- For the Dough:
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (105-115°F)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- For the Boiling Water Bath:
- 8 cups water
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
- 1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- 2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 6. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
- 7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- 8. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope, about 24 inches long. Shape each rope into a pretzel shape.
- 9. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds per side. Work in batches.
- 10. Remove the pretzels from the water and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- 11. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 12. While the pretzels are baking, prepare the cinnamon sugar coating. In a shallow bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon.
- 13. Once the pretzels are out of the oven, brush them with melted butter and immediately dip them into the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating them evenly.
- 14. Serve warm and enjoy!
