Description
This savory cheddar soda bread recipe is perfect when you crave homemade bread. It’s a quick, easy, cheesy loaf ready in under an hour!
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs (chives, parsley, thyme)
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease and flour a 9 inch round cake pan or baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and pepper.
- Stir in the chopped herbs and 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, reserving the remaining 1/2 cup for topping.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
- Stir until just combined. The dough will be shaggy and slightly sticky. Do not overmix!
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf in the prepared pan or on the baking sheet.
- Use a sharp knife to cut a cross into the top of the loaf, about 1/2 inch deep.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
